Solid-Liquid Separation Solution for a Danish Water Treatment Consultant

A Danish client specializing in environmental solutions, with a strong focus on industrial water treatment. The client approached us with a specific separation challenge: they needed a compact, efficient system to remove sand and sludge from washing water, with very limited installation space and demanding filtration requirements.

Initial Requirement & Challenge

The client needed a solid-liquid separation system for a specific application with the following parameters:

  • Equipment: Compact vibrating screen (1 unit)
  • Purpose: Separate sand and sludge from washing water.
  • Flow Rate: Approx. 4 m³/h.
  • Material: Stainless steel.
  • Special Conditions: Must be easy to clean and capable of handling low water level conditions.

Recommended Solution – Phase 1: Vibrating Screen

Our initial recommendation was the Model 1200 Medium-Frequency Vibrating Screen, designed specifically for sand-water separation with a separation precision of 0.5 mm.
However, after detailed discussions, two critical modifications were requested:

  1. Higher Filtration Precision: The client required a 50-micron (0.05 mm) screen to filter out fine granite debris.
  2. Space Constraints: The available space, particularly height, was very limited. The client shared an ideal equipment concept.

Our Analysis & Revised Suggestion:
We noted that the client’s ideal concept resembled a straight-through vibrating screen, which is better suited for dry powder materials. To achieve the required 50-micron filtration precision, a medium-frequency or high-frequency vibrating screen is technically necessary. Therefore, we proposed the more compact Model 600 Medium-Frequency Vibrating Screen. While its capacity is approximately 2 m³/h, it is the smallest model that can meet the precision requirement and fit the limited height.

Evolving Requirement & Phase 2: Alternative Solution

Due to the strict height limitations and the need for fine filtration, the client also requested consideration of a Self-Cleaning Filter (Brush Type) as an alternative, with these specifications:

  • Flow Rate: 2-4 m³/h
  • Inlet Pressure: 10-15 hm (likely meters of water column)
  • Outlet Pressure: Open discharge
  • Filtration Precision: 50 microns
  • Footprint: As small as possible, with installation flexibility (both vertical and horizontal mounting preferred).

Our Recommended Alternative:
We verified that the solid-to-liquid ratio in the client's water was just 0.25%, well within the maximum of 2% for the self-cleaning filter to operate effectively. We therefore recommended our smallest unit, the Model 219 Self-Cleaning Filter, which meets all the specified criteria.
