Stepped Grille Operation & Installation Manual

I. Main Application

The stepped bar screen is a high-efficiency fine screening device that integrates screening and removal of debris. It is widely used as a fine screen in small, medium, and large pump stations or wastewater treatment plants to intercept and remove floating materials in water, such as weeds, paper, cigarette butts, seed shells, fibers, hair, etc. This model offers a high solids-capture rate, ensuring the effective performance of downstream treatment processes.


II. Main Structure & Features

The stepped bar screen mainly consists of the drive unit, frame, traction chains, stepped mesh plates, washing system, and electrical control system.

  • The drive motor is installed on the main shaft at the front of the frame.
  • The two mesh plates on both sides are driven upward by the transmission chains, lifting the intercepted debris along their length.
  • When reaching the upper section, the sprocket reverses the plates to automatically discharge the debris.
  • A rotating brush simultaneously removes remaining waste from the mesh surface.
  • An internal washing system is installed behind the mesh plates to ensure complete cleaning during discharge.

The drive unit is positioned at the upper section of the frame.
Screw-type adjustment devices are installed on both sides of the frame to adjust the tension of the transmission chain.
The frame is a rigid rectangular structure welded from stainless-steel plates and profiles.
An inlet opening is located at the lower upstream end, and guide rails are installed on the front and rear frame panels.
The frame is installed in the center of the screen channel, and the gaps on both sides serve as effluent passages.
Flow-guiding baffles are installed on both sides of the upstream end to guide the flow and prevent floating debris from bypassing the screen.
The traction sprockets and guide components are installed at the upper and lower parts on both sides of the frame.
The stepped mesh plates are made of SS304 stainless steel, with evenly arranged perforations to allow water passage while intercepting solids. The stepped surfaces capture larger debris.


III. Installation & Commissioning Instructions

1. Checks Before Installation

1.1 Inspect whether the equipment was damaged during transport.
1.2 Verify that foundation dimensions match the installation drawings.
1.3 The two sidewalls of the screen well must be vertical to the top platform, with a verticality deviation not exceeding 20 mm; they must also be parallel, with a parallelism deviation not exceeding 20 mm.
1.4 Check that all embedded parts match the drawing positions and dimensions, and that embedded steel plates are flush with the top platform.
Once all conditions meet the requirements, installation may begin.

2. Installation Requirements

2.1 After placing the machine in position, the installation angle must meet design requirements.
The discharge outlet plane must be parallel to the screen-well operating platform.
The sidewalls must be perpendicular to the operating platform.
The level tolerance of the equipment must be within 1/1000.
Then weld the equipment to the embedded parts and tighten the anchor bolts.
2.2 Before powering the unit, insert the hand crank into the motor shaft square slot and rotate it in the direction indicated on the safety cover. Ensure nothing obstructs operation.
2.3 Remove the safety cover, loosen the tensioning sprocket, remove the chain from the reducer, and run the motor briefly to check whether the reducer rotates in the direction shown on the safety cover. Reverse rotation is strictly prohibited.
2.4 Use the tensioning sprocket adjuster to adjust chain tension and the tension screw to adjust rake-chain tension.
2.5 Check lubrication oil level in the reducer. If insufficient, refill with No. 30 mechanical oil to the marked level.
2.6 Reinstall the safety cover. Power on and run the machine unloaded. It should run without vibration, jamming, or abnormal noise. After a successful no-load test, start load operation.


IV. Daily Maintenance & Care

  1. Keep the area around the screen clean and inspect/clean at least once per day.
    Do NOT throw wood pieces, boards, or other debris into the forebay.
  2. If fibrous materials are found wrapped around the brush shaft during operation, remove them promptly. Clean the discharge plate regularly according to waste volume.
  3. Regularly check the reducer oil seals for leakage. Replace damaged seals.
    Refill oil to the correct level and replace regularly—after the first 15 days of operation, then every 3 months.
  4. Lubricate the four bearings on the frame regularly using lithium-based grease. Replenish every 30 days.
  5. Avoid long-term shutdown.
    If shutdown exceeds 7 days, drain water completely to prevent long-term soaking in stagnant sewage.
  6. Electrical maintenance must be performed by qualified personnel. Always disconnect power before servicing.
  7. Operators must be familiar with the equipment performance and know the correct operating and maintenance procedures.

V. Simple Operational Observation Methods

  1. Upstream:
    At the inlet screen, the left side is the upward-moving mesh—its surface should contain intercepted debris.
    The right side is the downward-moving mesh—its surface should remain clean.
  2. Downstream:
    Observe water flow in the effluent channels on both sides.
    When the screen is operating, water surges with increased velocity.
    When stopped, the flow decreases and the water level stabilizes.
  3. Observe one full operation cycle. There should be no abnormal noise.
