Maintenance and Operation Manual for Bag Filter

I.   Overview

JX filter can ensure safe use due to its reasonable structure, careful manufacture and strict quality control. Even so, improper installation and misuse may cause damages to the filter. Do not start the filter until the inlet and outlet of the filter is closed and the blow-down valve has been vented. The operation and maintenance personnel of the JX filter must be professionally trained.

II.   Schematic Diagram

The bag (basket) filters produced by JX FILTRATION(CHINA)CO.,LTD mainly include three types, that is, single basket, modular multi-basket and multi-basket filters. The schematic diagrams are as follow:

III.   Installation and Debugging

a. Before installing the filter, please be sure to check and confirm that the on-site parameters (operating temperature, operating pressure, etc.) are consistent with the design parameters of the filter, that is, the operating conditions must conform to the specifications on the filter nameplate. Decompression valve is recommended to be installed on the pipeline before the fluid enters the filter, and over-temperature and over-pressure are strictly prohibited.

b. Ensure that the material of the seal ring of the filter is compatible with the object (medium).

c. Plenty of space shall be reserved for the installation site in case of maintenance, replacement and cleaning.

d. JX FILTRATION(CHINA)CO.,LTD is not responsible for the failure of the filter caused by the inaccurate information provided by the customer (including filters, seals, and filter media).

IV.   Start

a. Ensure the inlet and outlet of the filter is closed and the exhaust valve is open;

b. Use a tool or steel pipe to open and remove the eye-nut on the cap of the filter. For multi-basket filters, rotate the hand wheel to lift the cap, and push the rocker arm to unscrew it.

c. After opening the cap, check if the filter has been placed. If not, place the filter screen in the filter in turn and use the tool to tighten the hold-down gear.

d.  After ensuring that the filter screens are properly placed, close the cap and tighten the nut.

e. Before lowering the cap, check and ensure the seal ring is intact, properly in place and clean.
Change the seal ring in case of any damage! The seal must be in place.

f.  If a special rod is used to tighten the circular bolts, care must be taken not to overdo it. Excessive tightening of the ring bolt to close the cap is not allowed.

g. When tightening the ring bolts, the symmetrical crossover sequence should be followed. Tightening torque shall not exceed the limit value in any occasion, namely, multi-bag (basket) shall not exceed 315 Nm and single-bag (basket) 184Nm. When tightening the bolt, increase the tightening torque to the maximum amount as follows:

  • 1.   First, rotate to 50% of the maximum
  • 2.   Second, rotate to 80% of the maximum
  • 3.   Third, rotate to the maximum.

h. So far, the filter can be put into use: open the inlet valve slowly. The exhaust valve should be open at this time so as to clean the air inside the filter.

i. Close the exhaust valve immediately upon liquid flowing out of it, then open the outlet valve, fully open the inlet valve so as to enter the full filtration stage;

j. When filtering hazardous liquids, operators should be cautious to prevent them from being stained by liquid (the exhaust valve shall connect to the elbow all the time).

k. Empty the remaining air in the filter regularly to guarantee the filtration results.

V.   Maintenance

a. No special maintenance is required under normal conditions, but all parts shall be regularly checked for corrosion and other damages.

b. The replacement or cleaning of the filter basket depends on the clogging, changing of the filtered material, and the process pressure drop requirements.

c. Decide whether or not the filter basket is clogged according to the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet. Common methods are as follows:

  • 1.     Normally, the biggest damage pressure difference of the filter basket is 1.0~1.5MPa, but JX Filtration recommends that the user replace or clean the filter basket when the pressure difference reaches 0.25MPa;
  • 2.     The filter device equipped with the pressure difference alarm system will emit an audible and visual alarm when the set pressure difference is reached, that is, the filter basket needs to be replaced or cleaned;
  • 3.     Replace or clean the filter basket when the outlet flow rate is significantly reduced. Fail to replace the basket timely in case of above-mentioned situation might leads to breakdown of the filter or contaminating the clean liquid downstream, even explosion.

VI.   Procedures for cleaning or replacing filter bags:

a.  When there is compressed air to enable discharge (for low viscosity medium and small pressure difference replacement):

  • 1.  Close the inlet of the filter and connect the compressed air pipe to the exhaust valve at the top of the filter;
  • 2.  Open the compressed air valve and exhaust valve, determine the time of the ventilation according to the size of the filter and the residual liquid level in the down state. After the residual liquid is drained, close the discharge valve and compressed air valve and disconnect the compressed air and the exhaust valve;
  • 3.  Open the exhaust valve to release the pressure;

b.  When using natural discharge (for low viscosity medium and small pressure difference replacement), or using an air ball (for high viscosity materials or high pressure difference):

  • 1.Close the inlet and outlet, and open the blow-down valve;
  • 2.  Open the exhaust valve until the residue is drained;

c.  After confirming that the filter and spacer have been completely relieved of pressure, loosen the lock bolt, open the cap, and remove the filter basket for cleaning or replacement. The rest of the steps are the same as “4. Start”.

VII.   Operation

Cost-effective operation depends on various factors. Smaller design flow increases the filtration efficiency of the basket, extends the service life and improves the overall filtration quality as well as the system’s cost efficiency.

The flow rate should be as constant as possible, and the transfer pump should be placed in front of the filter inlet. Do not suspend or shut down during operation to avoid clogging.
